In my early years as a pastor I thought that I needed to take 27 weeks to prepare people for baptism, and if they said “no” to any of our studies that it was all over! I’ve found there is a much more effective approach that accomplishes the same objective.Listen to their story. Unfortunately as pastors we are generally much better at talking than listening! During the final clearing for baptism (or membership) ask the candidate(s) “How has God brought you to this place in your life?” then listen to their story. In a few minutes you will be able to see how God has been working in their lives, who has been instrumental in leading them to Jesus, His Word and His final movement, and what areas of spiritual growth might need to be strengthened in the future.Remember, a MODEL can Make Our Difficulties Easy & Light! ![]() Feel free to use, adapt or discard them in your ministry. But how do you make sure those who unite with God’s final movement through baptism (or Profession of Faith) have the best possible chance to become strong in their faith and witness for God? When someone has been prepared for baptism through Bible study and fellowship what can you do as a pastor to clear them well and give them a great start?
